Portraits of Java as a young program Mercury news 07/05/04
Geurrilla marketing stunts are part and parcel of Sun Microsystems' annual Java One conference but Sun
really pushed the limit this time by hiring four San Francisco artists to create paintings based on their
interpretation of the Java programming language. The resulting artworks were put up for auction. The Artists,
(David DeRosa, Sirron Norris, Nome Edonna and Kelly Tunstal)- obviously a very creative bunch- managed to
have fun with the assignment and ended up creating artwork that attracted bids from San Francisco Mayor
Gavin Newsome and James Gosling, the father of Java, among others.
When tech gal turned gallerist, Joan Doffing found a permanent home for her Soma Arts Gallery, she shared
the wealth - not only with her new Mission District neighbors and the mostly young, emerging local artists she
reps but also with one of the city's coolest (and local) actors, Danny Glover. Doffing handed over a $10K check
to the Trans Africa Forum of which Glover is a board chairman... Artist David DeRosa displayed two
interpretations of Glover - and ended up giving one of them to the actor. Despite one less sale, the artist
gained something even greater: "I got hugged by Danny Glover. How cool is that?"
Swells By Catherine Bigelow S.F. Chronicle 06/06/04
To talented artist David DeRosa, beauty is everywhere. His art is stripped of artifice and detail, allowing the
viewer to connect the lines and draw their own conclusions. In "Eliminating the Unnecessary," David manages
to truly capture the beauty that surrounds us.
Despite San Francisco's reputation as a full-tilt party town, this place is just loaded with spoil sports who'd like
to see the citizenry tucked into bed by midnight (or 9 p.m., in some neighborhoods). Let's see them complain
about the noise at "Art 415", the almost indescribably cool benifit party for the after-hours champions at the
San francisco Late Night Coalition... Stare in wide-eyed wonder as thousands of community minded locals
mingle their asses off.
Get your culture on at ART 415 @ Terra, a one-night only showcase of emerging S.F. talent, a benefit for the
San Francisco Late Night Coalition featuring the street-inspired work of local artists on the cutting edge of art,
music, film, fashion and dance. Catch DJ sets by Kramer (Arrival/Transition), Tom Thump (You Are Hear), Kelly
Tunstall, Soulside and live performances by Felonious onelovehiphop, Kid Beyond and Dhamaal Soundsystem.
You'll also get a chance to attend exclusive screenings of "Quality of Life," a documentary on graffiti culture in
San Francisco's Mission District by Summershines Productions, and excerpts from two new documentaries by
acclaimed Hunters Point filmmaker Kevin Epps. Also, witness gallery-style exhibitions of work by David DeRosa,
Retna and The ATM Art Show, a live painting session/sale that featured 60 local artists. Read more at:

Comment: The second show at Hotel des Arts, 447 Bush St., this time, with each participating artist given a
guest room to paint. Individual works are also for sale in the guest rooms, up and down the halls, and in
common areas. Mural painting became popular in America in the 1930's and 40's, following the Mexican
muralist movement which began in the 1920's, and the rise to popularity of the likes of Diego Rivera and David
Alfaro Siqueiros-- decidedly populist painters. Today, America appears on the threshold of a mural-painting
revival. For about a quarter century now, countless hundreds of artists across the country have been painting
up bare walls, railroad cars, municipal buses, subway cars, billboards, abandoned buildings, and whatever else
they can get their paints on. A number of them have inadvertently become rather skilled at conceiving and
executing large-scale compositions. So saunter on down to Hotel des Arts for a little preview of what some of
our local muralists have to offer.

San Francisco's Hotel Des Arts has expanded on the european art-hotel model with its latest show, 'Painted
Rooms.' The owners of this charming, turn-of-the-century boutique hotel and Joan Doffing of Soma Arts Gallery
tapped downtown artists-on-the-rise Kelly Tunstall, David DeRosa, Sam Flores and Sandro Tchikovani to
completely transform a handful of the hotel's guest rooms and suites into hip and uniquely inhabitable works
of art, essentially using the walls as their canvas. Hotel Des Arts is located at 447 Bush St., San Francisco. Call

This bay area show, which was hosted by artist Tim Gaskin, spotlighted the Hotel des Arts and three of it's
artists for their next show. I was among the three! Yay me!! For more info on the artists and their work with the
hotel, go here: >>> Hotel des Arts <<<
During this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, members of the industry were invited to
attend the Video Game Art show, featuring artists like Mars-1, David DeRosa and Tim Gaskin, whose works
have been -- at one point or another -- influenced by video games. The response from the public, the game
industry and the art field has been phenomenal. It has touched such a nerve, that there are plans for the show
to travel to other parts of the country. Check out the BUZZ this show got! News breaker, Down the Avenue and
New Grounds...
The custom boutique hotels around the world all took notice to the Hotel des Arts in the heart of San
Francisco's downtown Union Square when it launched last year. Last year they showed their project called
"Painted Rooms" at the "art hotel" with 16 custom painted rooms from people like David Choe and David
DeRosa, among others. This year they've come back adding an additional dozen more rooms including painted
rooms by Josh Feldman, The Vinyl Killers, Bryan Dawson and Maya Hayuk. Their roster of top notch
underground and emerging artist created rooms is totally impressive -- and the sky is the limit here -- they say
watch out for future painted rooms from folks like Shepard Fairey (Obey), and Dalek.
BPM Headgames By Suzanne Ashe 05 / 05
As San Francisco played host to the annual game developers conference, Polo's Blue Cube played host to a
video game art show. No, ample - waisted patrons were not subjected to a series of White Mage character
depictions or a collection of various dragon wings. Instead they were greeted with the POP art efforts of
Mars-1, Tim Gaskin, David DeRosa, Plasticfucker and more.
Right around the corner from San Francisco's couture shopping mecca Union Square lies Hotel des Arts, a
boutique hotel that specializes in showcasing emerging and underground artists from around the world... The
novelty of Hotel des Arts is found within its Painted Rooms... As of yet, 31 of the rooms have been completed
featuring the work of many culturally iconic artists including Sam Flores, David Choe, David DeRosa, Neon,
Damon Soule and Apex to name a few... The Hotel des Arts prides itself in providing affordable art and
inexpensive accommodations in the heart of the city...
Epicenter New Art Goes Old School By Kai Ma 05 / 05
Relying heavily on Stark color duality, DeRosa's subjects -- from a payphone to a fire hydrant -- stand alone as
icons that are often taken for granted.
Mid-Market art walk. A lot's happening artwise in the 6th and Market quadrant these days. The revival has
begun; numerous artists now live, work, and show in this several block vicinity. Beat the gentrification-- see it
now. (We recieved quite a bit of notice: SF Weekly, Sfist, Juxtapoz, Falvorpill and Fecal Face)
Group show of art by artists who have studios at the gallery. (Red Ink) Plus up front is a documentary survey of
over fifty vintage photographic views of the Mid-Market area (the immediate vicinity of Red Ink Studios) taken
from the 1930's through the 1950's when this part of town was the entertainment capital of Northern California.
Artists featured: Brad K. Alder, Susanah bettag, Tony Deifell, Dierdra De Francroixa, David DeRosa, Karina
Figueroa, Ryan McJunkin, Michelle King, Aondrea Maynard, Jennifer Poon, Marlon Shakespeare and Angela Willets
It's a part of town in flux. Gentrification is creeping throughout SoMA, with gourmet groceries and lofts still
being built even five years after the dot com money has gone away. The art galleries in this area are not part of
that bright and shiny upswing though.

Yelp (real people, real reviews) By Phil M. 01/23/ 06
California Modern / ( Red Ink Studios) is...dedicated to promoting CA emerging Artists... I first took notice when
I saw David DeRosa's fantastic work at a wine tasting event. His work is very powerful and reasonably priced.
The Curators have done a fantastic job of bringing in great talent and presenting it in a relaxing,
unpretentious setting.
MSN Travel Hotel room or art exhibit? By Kate sekules 12/05
Hotel des Arts, San Francisco:
This modest 51-room hotel has been quietly distinguishing itself from its middle-of-the-road rivals by gradually
covering its walls with art by emerging talent. Nothing is framed, though. The artists range from techno-punk
mavericks to stars on the verge... David DeRosa's has a color-saturated portrait that hovers over the bed.
This mungo jumbo splurge of a shindig packed the Concourse Exhibition Center with easily a couple thousand
people. (It's so impressive, I can't believe I've never heard of it.) Anyway, there's copious food and beverages,
tunes, performances, live music, massages, lounges, posing, prancing, pflirting, posturing, strutting, woofing,
and all kinds of swanky sh*t like that and last but not least-- you guessed it-- ART-- and plenty of it. Exhibitors
included Red Ink Studios, Togonon Gallery, Nome Edonna, Sirron Norris, Norm, Reyes, Brad K. Alder, Amanda Lynn,
David DeRosa, Vulcan, etc etc etc. Don't miss next year's throwdown. It's superlative, superior, and sumptuous
all rolled into one
Art Business Best of the Bay Area party By Alan Bamberger 06/06
Art MOCO - Modern Contemporary Art 08/03/05
Hotel des Arts offers not plasma television screens nor Frette linens, but instead the experience of sleeping
within a mural. Each of the painted rooms is by a different artist, so the styles vary enormously. In addition to
the permanent art work, Hotel des Arts is also home to a gallery featuring the work of happening San
Francisco artists...
OvaHere Best of the Bay Area Party By Tony Wodark 07/06
Artists like Reyes and Norm had an entire mural, and others had solo walls such as David DeRosa, displaying his
POP Impressionistic style, and Tanja Nixx, who exhibited her paintings of abandonment and desolation. They
had a presence unlike other collectives, and definitely made a name for themselves amongst party guests.

solo art show by the critically-acclaimed POP IMPRESSIONIST David DeRosa. We met David at our CC Salon
during Macworld 2007. He's a major break-out artist and someone worth meeting.
This Show -- which was my hometown send-off -- went very well... the support and tremendous feedback the
work got was just the shot in the arm I needed... Sleep would have been better but hey, I'm not complaining. A
big thanks to the following media who posted info on the tour... Juxtapoz, Los Angeles City Beat, Fecal Face &

The first stop on my Catachismic tour was at the Infusion Gallery in LA's Historic, Downtown Gallery Row --
where I had the chance to be interviewed by "Art Diva" Alex Rosa for the web-based radio program: Art Rocks!
Click this link to hear it...
"Using his sublime observations and a limited palette of two or three colours at a
time, David creates some of the most incisive images I have seen. The essence of
the subjects and ideas are clearly visible, and quite striking..." (thanks J.L.!!!)
Salt Lake City Weekly "24 seven" 05/31/07
"David DeRosa... (is) exploring much larger and deeper issuses in his traveling exhibit: The Catachismic Series,
which explores themes of humanity and spirituality and how they relate to different religions. DeRosa wants the
exhibit to become more of a sounding board than merely and art exhibit..."
The above link takes you to the article that Herndon Davis wrote about me along
with some pics of the art from the tour. To hear the web-based radio interview I
